Thank ‘Que to all our raving fans who came out over the weekend to see us at the 14th Annual Taste of Fort Collins. This was the first year in the festival’s history that the weather didn’t cooperate at all. Although it was cold and rainy, we took to Civic Center park and had a blast with Soul Asylum, Gin Blossoms, and especially local favorites Fierce Bad Rabbit.
Our guests know what a fun environment we have at Famous Dave’s. We sought to bring that Porkadelic vibe to the Taste and were honored to receive the 2010 “Most Creative Presentation” Award. As Famous Dave’s mascot, I’m accustomed to greeting fans with a warm embrace and a smile, but I must admit I still get nervous before big events. I don’t know why — maybe it’s a pig thing.
Long story short, I was as nervous as a pig could be before we introduced Famous Dave’s Legendary Pit BBQ to Ft. Collins at the 2009 Taste, just a few short months before our Grand Opening in the Front Range Village. Would people like me? What would Ft. Collins think about us?!
Holy smokes — The love Ft. Collins showed us was just the Oinkment my nerves needed. People raved about us, and Sugar Ray even stopped in the middle of a song to give me a personal shout out. What’s more, Ft. Collins honored us with the 2009 People’s Choice Award. A pig could simply not ask for more.

June 1 & 3- This week brings not one, but two stories of assault with a deadly grilling utensil. These stories leave us scratching our head - maybe we’re just too busy grilling the best BBQ imaginable with ours to have any malice?! June 1) A 50 year-old man in Aukland, New Zealand was hospitalized after being stabbed multiple times in the back with a BBQ fork. What little details are available can be found at 3news.co.nz and tvnz.co.nz. June 3) A 25 year-old man in Elgin, IL allegedly hit his boss’s cousin in the head with a grill scraper leading to two counts of aggrivated battery and bail set at $45,000 (as reported on suntimes.com).
June 2- Famous Dave’s took home the Ribfest trophy in Grand Haven Michigan over the weekend. (grandhaventribune.com) Famous Dave’s is also proud to receive AZcentral.com’s Reader’s Choice pick for best barbecue.

If you’re not, this week is the perfect time to sign up, because we’ve offered one lucky P.I.G. $200 in Famous Dave’s BBQ just for becoming our fan on Facebook. Fans receive special offers and stay up to date with all that is smokin’ in the world of ‘que. It’s a great way to tell us about your experience and share some sauceum photos too. May 25- SFWeekly has uncovered one of our favorite pairings: Chocolate and BBQ. Tamara Palmer explains on the SFoodie blog, “Barbecue sauce forms the smoky, slightly spicy base of a soft caramel filling encased in dark Felchlin chocolate from Switzerland.” If that leaves your mouth watering for a chocolate treat, you don’t have to fly to the San Francisco bay to get it. Famous Dave’s offers up Chocolate Covered Bacon at Coors Field.
May 26- We blogged last week about the importance of brushing up on grilling safety as the season heats up. Firefighters in Toronto had to put out a back yard blaze after a propane grill exploded. The cause? Covering the grill while it is still hot. The trapped heat will cause pressure to build in your propane tank and could cause a similar catastrophe in your back yard, so make sure your grill is cool before you put it away. Thanks to CBC for reporting the full story.
May 29-31 MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND. This Memorial Day weekend we’re smoking up something special for a Benefit BBQ in our Grand Junction neighbor’s parking lot. May 16 - “I like my BBQ like I like my women, HOT. Also, rubbed with Molasses, Coffee Grounds and Cayenne.” Conan O’Brien on Twitter. We reckon that comment might get him in some hot water with his wife (woman, singular), mother of his two children, Liza Powel. Still, we enjoy his humorous tweets. Follow us on Twitter, too!
May 17 - Knoxnews.com reports three men in Memphis, TN are being charged after deputies at the “Memphis in May Barbecue Fest” found 64 grams of marijuana and 100 prescriptions pills in the back of their tent. May 21 - As Spring heats up, we’re noticing a lot of headlines about backyard BBQ accidents. Before another Colorado spring slips into Summer, you may want to check out this video on Summer grilling safety from MyFOXDetroit.com. Stay safe, Porkaholics!
I have been visiting patients at The Children’s Hospital in Denver every month for the last four years to hand out heart-felt hugs, enthusiastic high-fives and thousands of stuffed pigs where they are needed most. Regular readers of this blog may recall a previous post about one special child, Taylor, whose friendship means the world to me - and the entire Famous Dave’s family. Thanks to care she received at The Children’s Hospital, Taylor remains cancer-free, and that’s Snoutstanding.
Famous Dave’s wanted a way to share the inspiration I get from my time visiting kids and to create a way for our guests to give back, too. At last, the porkfect opportunity has come to get you involved and I’m tickled pink that the new program bears my name, “Wilbur Cares.” Each of Famous Dave’s Colorado locations now carries Wilbur Cares dolls: pigture-perfect stuffed mini-replicas of yours truly. When you purchase a $7 Wilbur Cares doll, Famous Dave’s will donate 100% of the proceeds on my behalf (pigs can’t have bank accounts) to The Children’s Hospital Foundation.
Wilbur Cares coordinator, Marlon Johnson, “I started going to The Children’s Hospital 4 years ago because I am blessed to have 2 healthy daughters at home, and wanted to find a way to affect the kids dealing with very difficult situations in a positive way. With the rollout of the Wilbur Cares program, we will not only be supporting the children and their families, we will be supporting The Children’s Hospital financially as well as helping to raise awareness for all of their great work.” I couldn’t have put it better myself - and I’m one smart hog!
Wilbur Cares mission is to positively affect children dealing with difficult, and in some cases life threatening situations, by supporting them and their families in a time of need. Wilbur Cares will also help support The Children’s Hospital Foundation financially, as well as help raise awareness of their goals and objectives. Continually recognized as one of the nation’s outstanding hospitals by U.S. News & World Report, The Children’s Hospital is known both for its nationally and internationally recognized medical, research and education programs as well as the full spectrum of everyday care for kids throughout Colorado and surrounding states.
